| Wat
Intharawihan (sometimes spelled Wat Indravihan) is located on
Wisut Kasat Road on the northern edge of Banglamphu. This temple
is known for a huge standing Buddha image called Luang Pho To.
The image, 32 metres tall and 10 metres wide, was constructed
in the reign of King Rama IV. The topknot of the image contains
relics of the Lord Buddha brought from Sri Lanka. |

| Tucked
away from the main road, it is pleasantly surprising to find few
tourists at this temple. The first impression of the giant Buddha
image is how thin it actually is! But, the 32 metre height certainly
makes up for that. If you are a keen photographer, you might like
to visit in the morning as by the afternoon the sun will be directly
behind the image. |

|
| As
with most large Buddha images, moving in for a closer look is
overwhelming. The toe nails themselves are extremely large. |

|
| In
the grounds of the temple you will see the usual caged birds for
sale. You can make merit by buying the freedom of the birds. The
question of course is whether the birds are trained to come back
after you have left. In all shrines and temples in Thailand you
must remember to take off your shoes. Even if there isn't a sign
in English, look out for other shoes left by doorways. |
