| The
City Pillar Shrine (San Lak Muang):
This shrine is at
the south east corner of Phramane Ground or Sanam Luang. While
Thailan d
is a Buddhist country, aspects of Brahmanism which preceded
Buddhism, can still be seen.
The Thais, believe
that the City Pillar symbolized the establishment of a community.
The City Pillar of Bangkok was first built on April 21, 1782.
Later by the royal command of King Rama IV the old City Pillar,
was replaced with a new one. So there are now two pillars standing
together in the shrine.
The shrine was renovated
to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Bangkok in 1982. The old
building was destroyed and replaced by the new one. A shrine
for the city's guardian spirits was also built next to it. |
