It
was originally Khmer Hindu shrine, built in the reign of King
Jayavaraman VII (1157 – 1207). Then it was converted to
Buddhist sanctuary in Ayutthaya Period.
As
a Hindu shrine, there would have been a group of five prangs
in the compound, A principal is in middle and four minors are
at the corner each. These prangs were believed to enshrine these
Hindu Gods; Siva in the principal one, Brahma, Narai, Laksami
and Khantagumara were in each minors. At present, there are
still three of them remain. In Ayutthaya period the temple was
converted to Buddhism. The Brick Buddhist sanctuaries were renovated,
but the laterite wall is in its origin and this brings to the
name what is now “Wat Kam Phaeng Lang”
